Chicago’s Cafe Six06 celebrates its last weekend

Chicago cafe, bar and House music friendly venue Cafe Six06 will close its doors after one final weekend of music.

Six06, located at 1641 W Chicago Avenue has been a home for the House music community for almost 6 years.

I first heard about this cafe when DJs Brian Boncher and Rees Urban told me about a new cafe in West Town that had copies of 5 Magazine on the premises. Owners Pano and George Panagakis were real House aficionados, with tons of House memorabilia decorating the walls. And of course, Pano aka “Panye West”…always proclaiming he was going to play “his last DJ set ever.”

Colette, DJ Heather, Derrick Carter, Lady D, Ron Carroll, Lego, Osunlade and Tony Touch are just a few of the many DJs that have played at Cafe Six06. Pano and George also gave every local DJ, whether established or up and coming, an opportunity to shine with their many nights.

Reached for comment, George told 5 Mag that “We’re not going away. We overcame so many hurdles just to get Six06 open. The memories and relationships we made there will last forever. That building on Chicago Ave is just 4 brick walls without us, we will be back in a bigger and better space.”

Pano provided comment on Cafe Six06’s closing in the form of a poem:

“I was asked for a quote, so here it is…
this is our final goodbye, everyone we’ll miss
the house heads, the djs, west town, the greeks…
Except for the greek landlord, I hope Satan she meets…
It was a pleasure and absolute accomplishment to do what we did…
Always original, never sold out, and kept it funky you dig…”

This Friday, April 21, Six06 is hosting “Sixapalooza” with a huge number of DJs supporting:
